Meet July’s Place of the Month: Minnesota

If you’ve been around here for a while, you probably already know about this fun little thing we like to call our Place of the Month. If not, don’t sweat it. Allow us to introduce you. Every month, we like to focus on a different place.

This could be a US state, a country, city… anywhere in the world! We spend the entire month telling you all the cool things you need to know about that place, what to do there, when to go, and why it should be on your list of places to visit.

We are pretty giddy about this month. We might be just a little biased when it comes to this midwestern state and it’s 10,000 lakes. Mostly because we call this great lake state our home! It’s none other than MINNESOTA!

Fun facts about Minnesota

First and foremost, let’s get one thing straight. It is not always cold here! We specifically chose to focus on Minnesota for the month of July because summers in Minnesota are actually pretty awesome. It gets really hot and humid, but we deal because ya know, we need it after the long cold winters. Plus, we have many many lakes to keep us cool.

Here are 3 fun things to know about Minnesota:

  1. Minnesota is home to the Mall of America, the largest mall in the United States. The mall is the size of 78 football fields and has an amusement park inside it!
  2. MN has the nickname “Land of 10,000 Lakes” but if you count all of the lakes (including small ones) there are actually over 15,000 in this state!
  3. Minnesota has 90,000 miles of shoreline. That’s more than California, Florida, and Hawaii combined!

Where to go

Minnesota is a large state, 12th largest in the US to be exact. So, you can imagine that there are quite a lot of places you could visit. The landscape in each area of Minnesota can vary greatly, and there’s something for everyone!

Some of our favorite places to explore are Minneapolis, Duluth, Stillwater, Bloomington (for the Mall of America!), and Ely (where you can get to the Boundary Waters).

What to do

What you should do during your time in Minnesota will totally depend on what time of year you are visiting. If you plan to come during the summer, you will definitely want to get out on a lake! If you’re coming in the fall, be sure to check out the beautiful changing leaves and their crazy colors. In the winter, you can go ice skating, ice fishing, snowmobiling, or sledding.

Best time to visit

You will likely get a different answer from every Minnesotan you ask on this one. Some will say to stay away in winter, while others live for the MN snow and fun winter activities like ice fishing and snowmobiling. For us, there’s no right or wrong answer here. You would have fun in MN and find plenty of unique things to do, regardless of when you’re visiting.

However, if you really hate cold, snow, and ice… it might be wise to stay away from visiting in the winter months (Nov-March) and if you absolutely hate humidity try not to come during the dead of summer (late June-Sept).
