6 Things You Didn’t Know About South Dakota

As we say farewell to the month of September, we also bid farewell to our place of the month, South Dakota. But, before we do so, we want to give you a few more fun facts about this great place!

Wow, can you believe that September is already coming to an end? Where does the time go!? We loved having South Dakota as our place of the month in September. Before we officially say goodbye to this location and hello to next month’s place (any guesses??) we thought we would give you just a few more reasons that South Dakota is so cool.

Be sure to check out the 5 Reasons to Visit South Dakota and if you’re in need of some help in planning a trip, check out Wild Bum’s awesome guides to South Dakota! You can find the guides here.

1. Referred to as “the land of infinite variety”

With so many various landscapes–we’re talking mountains and prairies, rivers and lakes, monuments and wildlife–this place has a little something for everyone when it comes to it’s land. You will be pleasantly surprised by the landscapes you find in South Dakota. They are unexpected, but insanely beautiful!

2. 16th in size of all 50 states

Who knew? It makes sense with the variety of landscapes that South Dakota is a lot bigger than you might initially think. There is a lot of ground to be covered in this state. Because of its size, it is a great place to take a road trip. Driving is a wonderful way to get from place to place and there is plenty to see along the way.

3. Highest point in the United States east of the Rocky Mountains

That’s right! There are mountains in South Dakota. I’ve known this for some time, but it still surprises me every time I hear it. It’s an easy fact to forget because we often think of this area of the US as being flat, flat, flat. The highest point is known as Black Elk Peak. So, if you’re in need of some mountains, South Dakota is calling to you.

4. More shoreline than the state of Florida

Say what? Who knew!? Seriously. I did not. But, with all of the rivers and lakes that South Dakota has to offer, it adds up to more than the shoreline of FL. Mind. Blown.

5. 6 National Parks and 56 state parks

What a thing to claim, eh? Pretty cool that this little mid-western state can pack such a punch. With this many places in just one state, there is definitely no shortage of places to see and things to do!

6. Home to more than 1,500 bison and many other wildlife

Not only is the landscape in this state incredibly diverse, but the wildlife is just as diverse. There are tons of free roaming animals, some of which you won’t find as easily anywhere else. It’s so fun to see these animals up close and personal in their natural habitat.

South Dakota is wonderful for a visit at any time of the year. There is something for everyone whether it’s the middle of summer or dead of winter. For help planning your trip, be sure to check out our guides! Find more information and fun facts about traveling to South Dakota here.
